Kings Lynn Hanse Festival

Now despite growing up in Norfolk, I have to admit I had not heard of the Hanse Festival last weekend!

The festival celebrates Kings Lynn history with ‘Die Hanse’ a mediaeval league of towns around the Baltic and North Sea with trading links, formed when German merchants from the Baltic and Hamburg secured trading privileges with Kings Lynn in 1271.

We did not get to see all of the Hanse festival at the weekend, but I was fascinated with the actors celebrating the medieval traders, their knowledge of their trades and their enthusiasm in telling their stories was brilliant.  I learnt a great deal from them, and could have listened a lot longer if it were not for the tired nieces!

GoGo Gorillas in Norwich

Gorilla Gladstone Gorilla Alan Partridge Gorilla Boris Gorilla Guy

I finally got to Norwich at the weekend and had great fun with my two younger nieces hunting down gorillas!  The standard of artwork on some of these gorillas is just amazing, and some of the artists gorilla King Kongmust have spent many hours perfecting their creations.  Congratulations to all involved and let’s hope plenty of fun has been had by all the visitors and the charities involved all benefit.  The re-painted Freddie is back in place, and although not officially part of the numbered trail, we also found the Alan Partridge Gorilla!  One point my nieces were disappointed on, was the lack of small merchandise to commemorate their day, a missing opportunity to raise funds for the charities I think. Gorilla Bradley Wiggins

If you want to catch these the GoGo Gorillas yourself, you need to be quick as the trail is due to close on 7th September and then the gorillas will be sold at auction.

More ‘room with a view’

PentneyLakesMy sister is currently having to stay in temporary accommodation while re-building work slowly progresses on her house.  However there are compensations when your temporarily accommodation comes with a view like this one.  Similar views can be had from the chalets and other holiday lets available at Pentney Lakes, near Kings Lynn.  What is your best view?

World Championship Snail Racing

I love some of the slightly more eccentric events that can be found on a summer Saturday in the UK, and this coming Saturday 20th July is no exception.  If you find yourself in West Norfolk this weekend do not miss the annual World Championship Snail Racing at Congham.  Yes, this is really a World Championship at a local village event, unless of course you know different? You can always race snails provided by the event organisers or find and take your own!snail racing
